Dear Faculty and Instructors,
Please see the attached announcement (information also copied below) regarding course development awards for Latino/a Studies. This is the final year that we will be offering awards at this level of funding. Please help spread the word, and feel free to contact me with any questions. Best, Jenny
COURSE DEVELOPMENT AWARDS: LATINO/A STUDIES IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH
MARCH, 2010

The Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South invites Duke faculty and instructors to submit course-development proposals to establish new US Latino Studies-related curricula. This competition offers up to two awards at the undergraduate level, each in the amount of $3,00.00.

Our goal is to increase the incorporation of Latino/a Studies content in currently offered courses, as well as to increase the Latino/a Studies-focused courses offered across all of the University’s disciplines and schools. In particular, with a new undergraduate certificate in Latino/a Studies in the Global South, we need more courses available to meet student demands. These courses will serve not only our Latino/a students on campus (approximately 7 percent of undergraduates identify as Latino/a), but all students on campus, for Latino/a Studies is both historically and recently part of US Studies. Courses may cover one or more disciplines, including: history, public policy, political science, romance studies, sociology, English, literature, cultural anthropology, and health.

Additional information on the certificate:

The undergraduate certificate in “Latino/a Studies in the Global South” explores the competing concepts of latinidad and hispanidad to critique concepts of identity, community, and nation. This interdisciplinary certificate program allows students to expand on their knowledge of Latino/a communities in the United States by combining courses across disciplines in the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences along with interdisciplinary introductory and capstone courses. In all of their course work, students will critically engage the concepts and methods behind the formation of Latino/a communities, literatures, and identities.
In the academy today, Latino/a Studies stands at the forefront of critical interpretations of United States identity formation. Latino/a Studies critiques and contributes to the formerly prevalent black/white binary division of racial formation, particularly in areas such as the Southeast, while at the same time focusing on the material conditions of the socio-historical construction of race and ethnicity in this society. The certificate in Latino/a Studies in the Global South will promote the critical project of the study of people of Latin American descent who are living/have lived in the United States and/or those who move between and among the United States and Latin American nations. Consciously transnational, the program seeks to explore the connections between those living in the United States and their families, friends, colleagues, and others living in Latin America and throughout the world.
Successful proposals may be US-focused or transnational, but will include at least 50% content on Latino/as or Latino/a Studies. We are especially interested in courses that have the potential to be taught annually.

Award recipients are expected to create a new course syllabus and to teach the course at least three times in the six years following the award, thereby insuring that a large number of students benefit from the faculty member’s work in curriculum development. Award recipients will submit a letter detailing the results of their curriculum development work along with their complete syllabus no later than the first day of classes of the semester in which the course will be taught.

Along with a draft of the course syllabus, the following application materials are required:
A.a curriculum vita of the faculty member who applies;
B.a letter on how often the course will be taught.
C.a brief letter or email from your department chair confirming that the course will be taught at least three times in the six years following the award
Questions and applications may be addressed to Jenny Snead Williams, Executive Director of the Program in Latino/a Studies in the Global South, at jennysw@duke.edu.

ANNOUNCEMENT of AWARDS: March 22, 2010

DEADLINE for APPLICATIONS: April 30, 2010

(http://jhfc.duke.edu/jenkins/) is looking for a student to participate in a research project over the coming year. The position will last from April 2010 through April 2011. Rising sophomores and juniors are especially encouraged to apply as are graduate students.

The Jenkins Chair at Duke University, Tim Lenoir, along with Research
Analyst, Patrick Herron, work at the intersection of a number of
disciplines, including collaborations in the field of science and
technology policy studies as part of the Center for Nanotechnology in
Society at University of California-Santa Barbara (CNS-UCSB;
http://www.cns.ucsb.edu/research-at-cns-ucsb-18/). Our role at the
CNS-UCSB is to study the full scientific output of entire nations in
nanotechnology using novel text mining-based methods Herron and Lenoir
have developed. Our work has been presented before US Congress in the
last year. You can learn more about our work through our recent
publication here: http://tr.im/PlGD.

For our current project we are constructing a database of global
nanotechnology research literature, patents, and related economic
indicators. We will be using these data to investigate the structure of
advanced research capabilities in several countries. We are seeking to
employ a student assistant in retrieving and assembling the data needed
for this database. The student assistant will be introduced to
techniques for database integration and methods of text mining and
visualization for analysis of large text corpora and economic data.

Students interested in or pursuing degrees in sociology, economics, new
media studies, information science, computer science, literature,
mathematics or statistics are especially encouraged to apply. We will
show you how to retrieve the data needed and begin training you in
skills fundamental to text mining, web search, and related hot
technologies. Any skills/experience with Google Scholar, ISI Web of
Science, Linux/Unix, bash scripting, SQL, or databases would be
desirable though not essential. We’re looking for a bright, hardworking,
and interested person wanting to learn something very new and exciting.

Your availability for the position will need to work one of two ways:

1) you will be available to work 10 hours per week during the fall and
spring semesters, and full time (40 hrs/wk) during summer school.
2) you will not be available full time during the summer but will be
able to work 15 hours/wk during all in-class weeks on the academic
calendar. Your availability would need to start in April 2010 and
continue through the end of April 2011. We will fully accommodate weeks
off for all breaks including time for exams.

Please respond by emailing:
- a brief statement of intent including relevant skills or interests in
the body of your email,
- your resume attached in pdf format,
to Patrick Herron at patrick.h@duke.edu. Interviews will begin immediately.

Thanks!
Patrick
